World Cup Recap: Brazil Opens Group Stage with Dominate Win

In their opening match of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World cup, Brazil defeated Panama by score of 4-0 at Hindmarsh Stadium. While OL Reign midfielder Angelina was available on the bench, she did not make an appearance in the match. With this win, Brazil sits at the top of their group with three points and a positive four goal differential.

From the first minute, Brazil was the dominate side and began to challenge Yenith Bailey in goal for Panama immediately. The offensive pressure from Brazil set the tone for the match, with the team firing off 32 shots throughout the entire match.

Brazil found their first goal in the 19th minute, when Ary Borges finished a cross from Debhina to score Brazil’s first goal of the World Cup. Energized by the goal, Brazil pushed on. In the 39th minute of the match, Brazil got on the board a second time. It was Borges once again who found the back of the net.

In the second half, Brazil did not back down. Just three minutes into the half, they added a third goal. This time, Borges played a beautiful pass into Bia Zaneratto, who made no mistake putting the ball in the back of the net.

To close out the scorning of the match, Borges notched one more goal off a cross from Geysa. Before the match was over, Brazil made some changes to their lineup, including subbing Marta onto the field, marking her sixth World Cup. At the final whistle, Brazil secured the 4-0 win, opening their World Cup campaign strong.
