Megan Monday: The Advocate

Though renowned for her on-field creativity and historic career, Megan Rapinoe is just as well known for her advocacy off the field. Involved in many social justice related issues, like LGBTQ+ rights, racial justice, gender equity and more, Rapinoe is an advocate for many, using her platform to spark change around the world.

In 2012, Rapinoe came out and since then, she’s been an outspoken voice for the LGBTQ+ community. From supporting gay marriage or transgender inclusion in sports, she doesn’t shy away from showing her love for more vulnerable communities and has continuously encouraged people to live authentically and embrace their identity.

In 2016, Rapinoe entered the spotlight for taking a knee during the national anthem at nation team match in solidarity with National Football League player Colin Kaepernick. Though this angered many, Rapinoe vehemently defended her actions and continues to use her voice and platform to support racial justice.

As a longtime leader and mainstay on the United States Women’s National Team, Rapinoe has also been heavily involved in the fight for equal pay, pushing the USWNT’s case forward, as well advocating for other nations to have the same rights.

Rapinoe’s impact and use of her platform for social justice cannot be overstated. Though her soccer career is soon coming to an end, she is sure to remain at the forefront of social issues, working tirelessly as an advocate for the issues she is most passionate about.
