OL Reign Down Under: Rose Lavelle
OL Reign midfielder Rose Lavelle and the United States Women’s National Team are set to begin their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign tonight at 6:00 p.m. PT against Vietnam. After joining OL Reign in 2021, Lavelle has been called up to the United States Women’s National Team for her second World Cup.
LEAGUE PLAY
Lavelle joined OL Reign in May 2021, making her debut against the Washington Spirit on May 30. She made 11 appearances throughout the season, starting in each match she appeared in. She ended the season with one goal and one assist.
In 2022, the creative midfielder achieved single-season career highs with 17 appearances. She recorded 48 shots, scored five goals and added one assist. She was named to the NWSL Best XI of the Month twice and was selected for the NWSL Second XI.
This season, Lavelle played in two games before sustaining an injury that has kept her out of play up until this point. In her two appearances, she connected an impressive 52 passes, managing an accuracy of 100% in the Reign’s defensive half of the field. She also made four key passes, two crosses and earned one assist, in OL Reign’s 2-0 win against NJ/NY Gotham FC.
INTERNATIONAL
Midfielder Rose Lavelle has 88 caps with the United States since making her debut on March 4,2017. In her 88 caps, she has scored 24 goals and added 20 assists. This is Lavelle’s second World Cup.
The midfielder made her debut in 2017 during the SheBelieves Cup, in a match against England. In her debut year with the USWNT, she started in all seven games she appeared in, adding two goals and an assist in that time. Her first international goal was scored against Russia.
The following year, Lavelle played 687 minutes across 13 matches. She tallied 4 goals and notched one assist, continuing to solidify her spot in the USWNT lineup. The Cincinnati native has a truly breakout year in 2019. She amassed 18 caps while recording four goals and four assists. She started and appeared in all six games for the U.S. at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France, scored three goals and was awarded the Bronze Ball. Notably, scored the second goal for the U.S. in the final against the Netherlands, helping the team secure a 2-0 victory.
Following her World Cup success, the adept midfielder made eight appearances in 2020, making seven starts and tallying three goals. In 2021, Lavelle went to the Olympic Games in Tokyo with the USWNT and made a total of 22 appearances for the team in the year. The midfield star added five goals and five assists, including one goal during the Olympics.
In 2022, Lavelle made 16 appearances for the United States, earned four goals and a career-high six assists across 16 matches. She was an integral part of the U.S. side that won the 2022 Concacaf W Championship to earn berths to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and 2024 Paris Olympics, recording a goal and an assist and playing in all five matches.
This year, the midfielder has made just four appearances, but has accumulated an impressive two goals and three assists in that short time.
