OL Reign Down Under: Jordyn Huitema
OL Reign forward Jordyn Huitema and Canada are set to begin their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign tonight at 7:30 p.m. PT against Nigeria. After joining OL Reign in 2022, Huitema has been a key player in OL Reign’s attack and now has been called up to the Canada Women’s National Team for her second World Cup.
LEAGUE PLAY
Huitema signed with OL Reign in June 2022 and made her debut on July 30 against Angel City FC. She appeared in all 10 matches left in the regular season for the Reign after joining the team, making starts in nine of those matches. In her 758 minutes of playing time, she recorded two goals and two assists for the Reign, becoming just one of three players to finish the season with multiple goals and assists.
This season, Huitema has been a regular in OL Reign’s lineup, playing in 13 matches and earning 11 starts. She has recorded four goals in the 2023 season, notching three of those goals with her head and one with her left foot. The forward has also added nine key passes and two crosses.
Putting in work all over the field, the Chilliwack native made 10 clearances, two blocks and one interception. She has connected 164 passes and earned 19 fouls for OL Reign.
During the 2023 UKG NWSL Challenge Cup, Huitema has played in three matches and made one start. She has scored two goals – one with her left foot and one with her right foot. She has also completed 21 passes, five clearances and two interceptions for the Reign.
INTERNATIONAL
Forward Jordyn Huitema has 64 caps for Canada since making her debut in 2017. She has made 23 starts, scored 16 goals and added six assists for Canada. This is the 22-year-old’s second World Cup.
The forward made her senior debut with Canada on March 8, 2017, at just 15 years old in an Algarve Cup Final match against Spain. Later that year, she recorded her first international goal against Costa Rica, before scoring her second international goal just minutes later.
The following year, Huitema added four goals for Canada in her eight appearances and four starts. She was an important part of the Canada squad that won a silver medal at the 2018 Concacaf Women’s Championship.
In 2019, she made six starts in ten appearances. In 2020, the forward registered eight caps and three starts. She earned her first assist and added seven goals for Canada, including the game-winner in the team’s 1-0 victory over Costa Rica in the 2020 Concacaf Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship semifinal.
2021 brought 12 caps and one goal for Huitema. She was a part of the Canada side that won a gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament in 2021. In 2022, Huitema starred in 15 matches and made eight starts. She scored one goal and added a career high of five assists.
This year, Huitema has played in four matches. She has scored one goal – the game-winner in Canada’s 2-1 win over France.
