Megan Rapinoe Announces Retirement at End of 2023 Season

Forever Reign: A Celebration of Megan Rapinoe on October 6

OL Reign forward and club original Megan Rapinoe today announced that following the conclusion of the 2023 NWSL season, she will retire from professional soccer. OL Reign will commemorate Rapinoe's illustrious career at its final match of the regular season at Lumen Field on October 6 against the Washington Spirit. Details surrounding the "Forever Reign: A Celebration of Megan Rapinoe" themed match will be announced at a later date.

Rapinoe, an 11-year veteran of the league, has been an integral part in shaping OL Reign’s identity on and off the field. The international star joined the Reign during the league’s inaugural season in 2013 and has remained with the team ever since. She currently holds the club record for most career goals scored (48) and assists (25) and ranks fourth all-time in regular season appearances (109) for the Reign.

At a league level, Rapinoe has a long resume of recognitions, including three NWSL Shields with the Reign, one NWSL Best XI selection and five NWSL Second XI selections, tied for the third-most combined selections. The 38-year-old has also earned NWSL Player of the Month four times, tied for the most in league history, and has been named to the NWSL Best XI of the Month eight times. She is the all-time league leader in penalty kick goals (13) and is the sixth-most prolific NWSL player in all-time goals and assists.

Rapinoe's impressive career includes three seasons in the WPS from 2009-2011, as well as a season with Olympique Lyonnais in France from 2013-2014.

A trailblazer in women’s soccer and beyond, Rapinoe’s reach extends into her international playing career and activism efforts. With 199 caps for the United States Women’s National Team, she boasts an Olympics Gold Medal and is a two-time World Cup champion. For her iconic 2019 World Cup performance, she was named Best FIFA Women’s Player 2019 and won the 2019 Ballon d’Or Féminin.

Exemplifying what it means to be a leader on and off the pitch, Rapinoe was also named one of the TIME’s 2023 Women of the Year and became the first ever soccer player to receive the Presidential Medal of the Freedom in 2022.

Additional information on tributes to commemorate Rapinoe and her career will be announced soon, including a special celebration during OL Reign’s final home game of the season at Lumen Field on Friday, October 6, against the Washington Spirit.
