Reign FC Continues Preseason Training in Portland for Thorns Spring Invitational
Reign FC continues to ramp up its preseason schedule in anticipation of the 2019 NWSL season. The club will play three matches next week as part of the Thorns Spring Invitational, all at Merlo Field on the campus of the University of Portland in Oregon.
“I’m very happy with the way this week of training went,” Reign FC head coach Vlatko Andonovski said Friday. “We finally have everybody in training. All the internationals are in. It shows right away. Everything on the field is better. Everyone on the field is more intense; so is the training. I’m also very excited about the opportunity to go to Portland and play three great games. I think we’ll have an opportunity to see the talent that we have on the team.”
The trip will be the Reign’s second to the Thorns Spring Invitational, having previously swept the competition back in 2016. The Reign will face the U.S. Women’s National Team U23s Sunday, March 24 at 11:30 a.m. PT.
The Reign will take on the Chicago Red Stars Wednesday, March 27 at 1:30 p.m. PT, before facing the Portland Thorns Saturday, March 30. The Reign won their only previous meeting against the Thorns in preseason play back in 2016.
The week of work will allow the club to evaluate several non-roster invitees, as well as examine how well the squad is adopting the tactical system.
“We also want to see where we are in the preseason process,” Andonovski said. “We still have time to change things tactically if we think we need to, but if we think it’s working then we can get even better at it and move on with what we have in mind.”
Reign FC concludes its preseason schedule with a game against the University of Washington at Husky Soccer Stadium in Seattle Friday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m. PT.
